Self‑Portrait Grid Animation
An experimental self‑portrait created in Adobe Animate using a modular grid reveal to explore timing, hierarchy, and rhythm in motion.

Animation
A modular grid reveal gradually uncovers the portrait over time, creating a “crystal‑like” visual rhythm as tiles appear, disappear, and recompose the image.
Overview
This piece began as a painted self‑portrait, then evolved into a motion study built around a strict grid system. In Animate, the grid becomes a timeline: each cell is a unit of pacing that controls when and how the portrait is revealed.
The result is intentionally abstract—focused less on literal likeness and more on composition, anticipation, and the way motion can guide attention.
- Grid as structure (composition + reveal)
- Timing & rhythm through staggered tile sequences
- Visual hierarchy in motion (focal areas appear with intention)
- Teaching‑ready example for motion + design principles
Process
- Portrait asset (base painting / artwork).
- Grid system (tile size, spacing, and overall rhythm).
- Timeline reveal (staggered in/out sequences per tile).
- Pacing refinement (focal areas appear first; pauses for anticipation).
- Export (MP4 for web + stills for documentation).
- Modularity: small units make timing edits fast.
- Hierarchy: reveal order directs attention.
- Contrast: dark tiles amplify “crystal” flashes.
- Consistency: repeated patterns create rhythm.
Teaching value
This project supports my teaching story because it makes core motion principles visible right away. Students can focus on sequencing, spacing, and attention direction before moving into more complex animation.
